Routine vs Medical Eye Exams
At Associated Eye Care, we aim to provide clear and transparent billing for your eye care. There are two main types of eye exams: routine and medical. Routine eye exams are focused on updating glasses and/or contact lens prescriptions and routine health screening. Routine exams are generally billed to your vision insurance (e.g., VSP, EyeMed). Routine exams are not intended to assess, discuss, or manage medical conditions such as dry eyes, cataracts, diabetes, or glaucoma, even when those conditions are stable. They are also not appropriate to discuss or investigate new symptoms, such as eye pain, flashes/floaters, or vision changes due to medical conditions. In contrast, medical eye exams are focused on monitoring and managing medical conditions and are billed to your medical insurance (e.g., Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield). Sometimes medical problems are discovered during a routine eye exam, and the focus of the visit changes from a routine eye exam to a medical exam. As a medical eye clinic, the vast majority of exams that patients consider their “annual eye exam” are medical exams at Associated Eye Care, and are therefore billed to medical insurance. Most medical insurance plans do not cover glasses prescription checks (refractions), though many patients like to have this performed at their annual medical eye exams. If your medical insurance does not cover refractions, then you will be responsible for the cost when a refraction is performed. To avoid surprises, always communicate any eye concerns when scheduling and understand your insurance coverage. For any questions, our team is here to assist!
Accepted Insurances
Our office accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare, for ophthalmic procedures. While we file claims for all insurance plans in which we participate, please note that this does not guarantee reimbursement or in-network status. Some insurance plans may require a referral for certain services, so we encourage you to verify your plan’s specific requirements with your insurance provider. Additionally, your plan may include optical benefits – please reach out to your insurer to confirm the details and coverage for your specific plan.
We are here to assist you in navigating your insurance, but ultimately, it is your responsibility to confirm your coverage and potential costs before your visit.
